Acoustic Sealant (that is
the name on the package) is a product made by MONO and is used by carpenters
when building a house. It comes in a tube just like silicone.
As it says on the packaging: "It effectively reduces sound transmission
for drywall applications."
It was recommended to me
by a friend because it stays flexible at low temps (7 C / 20 F).
I have not had a case where it has leaked yet (4 yrs), and this past year
I even took a shortcut. I only used a little of it and I only duct
taped one side of the plastic join. It still didn't leak.
I don't know if silicone
will work as well, but it will do when Acoustic Sealant can't be found. Several people have emailed me saying they can't buy it at their local hardware stores. Keep in mind that the Acoustic
Sealant is only a back up in case the duct tape leaks.
I usually buy it at a local
hardware store for $3 Canadian. If you live in the U.S., with
the exchange rate it should be practically free!! :o)
