Mark writes: "My father-in-law and I set up our first rink last night (about 17 deg F) and it's supposed to be very cold for the next 3 or 4 days. I used 2" x 6" boards and while it's only 8' by 16' my kids (ages 6 and 4) are really excited. I put it on my brick patio and then covered the brick with a thin layer of sand (to make it a lighter color and to protect the tarp from any sharp corners on the brick). This morning, the most shallow spot was frozen solid but I cracked the ice testing it in a deeper spot. Too anxious to wait! I'm American (grew up in Maryland) and was never into hockey as a kid but married into a Canadian family and my son has been talking hockey since he learned how to talk.
