My 2003 Backyard Rink

This years rink started out slow, but ended up being the longest year for skating yet. We first skated on Jan 4th and we skated for the last time on March 17, 2003 which was the latest I have ever used one of my rinks. It wasn't easy though, as we had mountains of snow this season. We were actually challenging the record breaking year of 2001 for a while. We also had our share of rain.

New for this year was plywood at the fence end, improvements to my 1' high boards (2x4's), steel brackets attaching those boards to my deck posts which made them very solid, and I also installed 2" x 4"'s in the corners to simulate rounded boards.

I decided to put the center ice dot in this year as I skipped it last year. I am glad I did do it, but I found I had to cover it in the daytime to prevent damage in that location. I can't imagine putting lines on my rink here in this climate.

This years rink was definitely a success. We got many hours of skating in and lots of fun. We had about 10 weeks of potential skating days. 8 weeks is what I hope for so I was pleased.
