"A Canadian Tradition

Every fall for the last 9 years, as the temperature drops, the excitement rises as the Charlton Backyard Rink is assembled. Each year, it’s a different rink with many different stories.

This year’s rink is 20’ – 30’ wide, 45’ long and 42” thick on the slope with scoreboard, flags, Coaches Corner and the Queen. The boards are 8’ high on three sides to shelter us from the wind and to protect the ice from the sun. As I was erecting these walls, our Greek neighbours behind us humorously said that if this year we were, once again, adding the “second story,” they were going to paint a mural on “their side.” Since they have been such great sports, I quickly purchased and hung a Greek flag.

New this year is rope lighting along the ice, in the neutral zone – looks great at night!

We omitted the red and blue lines since it melts the ice too much, but we did paint the goal lines, centre ice and made blue creases (of tissue paper) with a white maple leaf in the centre – very cool!

By mid January, temperatures were favourable for flooding. One night it was so cold, a 6-8” icicle formed on my gloves before I had realized it! Our skating season began on January 26th and has been an outstanding success. We have had birthday, hockey team parties and community skates involving many skaters. We are glad to be part of a truly great Canadian tradition."

Really nice rink guys. Great job.
