Cliff Leshchyshyn's Backyard Rink 2003/04
Yorkton, SK  Canada

January 2004
Rink
120' x 60'

Cliff writes:

"During the 1960’s, my four brothers and I would always clear a pond for our hockey rink. Now, for my son Matthew (10), daughter Lauren (8), and wife Rachel, the tradition continues!

But this rink building project was not going to be easy! First we had to remove about seventy large trees and underbrush. With a borrowed loader I hauled dirt and clay from my nearby field. One end needed almost four feet of clay fill to get the project level. Then all weather plywood boards went around the 120 x 60 foot rink.

Having the rink in the woods keeps out the prairie winds and drifting snow. Night games are made possible with eight light stands totalling 4000 watts of lighting. The red and blue lines, goalie lines, faceoff dots and large red maple leaf sign at center ice all add to the effect. Both ends of the rink have a six foot high chainlink fence to keep the pucks in play. The original six NHL logos, two Home Depot signs and a large Hockey Night In Canada billboard all adorn the north end and add great color.

This rink took our family about two months of afternoons and evenings to build. I am the coach of the Atom Yorkton Terriers, and it’s great to have Matthew’s team playing here at night. Being out there with our friends and neighbors to enjoy Canada’s greatest sport makes it all worthwhile."

Awesome!! Very good job Cliff. Thanks for the pic.
