Dwight DeGiacomo's Backyard Rink 2002
New Brighton, Minnesota  USA

The 2002 "Best Backyard Rink" Contest Winner

It was tough picking a winner this year but Dwight's Rink edged out Ken Ingersoll's Rink by one point in the ratings. It was the curved boards that pushed Dwight's rink over the top. Another rink that obviously was in the running was Bryan Hammitt's Rink, but I felt it didn't really qualify for the contest due to it's immense size and it's obvious level of involvment required to construct such a wonderful rink. Otherwise it was a 'lock' for the winner. Congratulations to all entrants.

"This year's version is 35' x 70' (next year will be 40' x 80') and has been a lot of work due to the warm weather we've been having.

I have built full size boards, painted them and put up a backstop to keep the pucks and tennis balls in.  I have eight flood lights which provide more than ample lighting, I haven't used a liner in the five years I've been making them, but am considering it next year.  We have a walkout basement that turns into the neighborhood warming house.

We usually get 10-12 kids per night playing hockey till about 9:00 pm.
Last year, we had one day that we didn't have anybody skating on it (windchill was bitter!).  The kids love it and so do the parents.  I have noticed that I have more dads & moms playing this year.

I flood nearly everynight and try to get as thick a base as I can.  The thickest area right now is about 8-9 inches.  This allows it to weather several days of warm weather and still be able to play."

Thanks for the picture Dwight.
