"I am sending you a few pictures
of our rink that has been put in Jackson, NJ (Yes, you heard it right
NEW JERSEY). We are located in the middle of the state about 15 miles from
the ocean.
Thanks to this years cold
weather we were able to construct our first back yard rink that froze to
the max. The base of the ice should be anywhere from 3"to 6" thick.
The rink is 36' x 48' and is constructed of 2x10s. Since there is approximately
a 14" pitch, 2/3 of the rink has two rows of 2x10s.
We put up 16"sideboards
made of 3/4 plywood on two sides and fastened them to the 2x10s. The side
behind the goal area is set against a chain link pool fence with 24"boards.
The liner is white with another black one underneath as a secondary barrier.
We used cut up cardboard
(from rink tips ) to secure the liner to the boards.Notice that we painted
the bottom portions of the side boards with a white stripe in order to
reflect light and reduce melting from day sun. Our biggest problem is leaves
burning the ice.
We use the rink nightly
and after school when the sun goes down in order to utilize the colder
weather. Usually there are are 4-6 kids each night. On weekend we have
"moonlight skates" and have skated until 1 AM in the morning.
We are very proud of the
fact that we were able to get this rink going as far down in NJ and have
been skating for about 3-4 weeks. We should be able to skate till March.
Yes in NEW JERSEY.
I think that our first attempt
was a sucess and that next years it will be even better since we have learned
alot from the tips and on the job training."
Good job in a tough location
for making rinks. Thanks for sending in your pic Joe. |
