Paul Ilchena's Backyard Rink 2002/03

January 2003
Rink

Paul's wife Karen writes:

"In a household full of females, it has been my husband's desire to provide a fun skating experience for his two daughters. This is the second year and his second attempt to create a winter wonderland in our backyard.

With a small space to work with, Paul has been able to transform our entire backyard into an inviting skating environment that is fun, accessible and enjoyable for his daughters, Emily (age 7) and Abby (age 4).

The largest section of the rink is 12’ x 20’ with a fun racing strip 6’ x 20’ along the side of the house towards the garage. This long narrow section of the rink is the new challenging addition to his layout this year and much-loved by both girls.

The hours he has spent thawing out the hot and cold taps in the garage; lugging the garden hose to the basement to keep warm; drying out his water-soaked gloves; shovelling and sweeping have truly paid off.  The extra touches he has added this year like the outdoor fireplace to snuggle up to and flood lights to dance in have been a huge hit."

Great job Paul and thanks for the pic Karen.
