"As a boy growing up in
small town Ontario during the 60’s you always had your stick by the door.
Early Saturday in the old arena, after school on the road or on the hardwood
floor with a rolled up sock, it really didn’t matter. “He Shoots
… He Scores!”
Recently, we moved from the
city into rural south-western Ontario and I found myself with a big yard.
The first snow arrives, your eyes get glossy and you head outside like
a zombie ... it’s uncontrollable.
This is our second attempt.
Last year we learned a few things. This year, I’ve proven I wasn’t
paying attention.
As you can see, my rink design
is circa 1920. No boards or liner to keep the water in. Just
stake it out, pack down a bit of snow, apply water with a garden hose,
patch, scrape, repeat often and hope it stays cold.
In southern Ontario, Mother
Nature does not endorse this technique.
The big melt downs are truly
painful. As you can see by the New Year’s Eve photo there wasn’t
much snow around the place. +10º C and rain didn’t really help
the cause.
Anyway, our rink survived,
we now have snow and all is well. Minto Leaf Gardens is 80’ x 32’,
shiny, smooth and everyone's looking forward to an abundance of fresh air
and rosy cheeks!"
Great job and thanks for
the pic Scott. |
