"This is a photo of the Vergeer
family rink located in West Lorne, Ontario, Canada. The rink is located
on Hollanada Farms and is the number one asset in the tobacco family farming
operation. Vergeers have built a rink every year for the past 20
years with this years rink breaking records.
This photo was taken January
20, 2003 and the temperatures have been below nornal for over a week and
expected to remain that way for awhile yet. The ice is a solid 7-8"
thick and is maintained daily with the farms
homemade ice re-surfacer.
In the past few years the rink has grown to be 50 x 100' and even an overhead
lighting system was installed to keep the games going into the night.
10, 300 watt light bulbs are needed to keep the games going.
A double board system is
used for the skeleton with a sheet of 5mm plastic laid between to
keep the structure water tight. This year some
lines were also added along
with the Hockey Night in Canada Logo at one end and a Canadian flag at
the other. Theres even a section of the barn which is heated and
acts as a dressing room which allows for thawing and a warm place to catch
your breath while the ice is being cleaned. Most of family members
are older now and our passing the construction tourch to the younger generation
but still returning weekly for traditional night games."
Great job and thanks for
the pic Derrick. |
